Helping the Helpers: A Focus on Provider Mental Health

Les services médicaux d’urgence (SMU) sont une profession très stressante, qui peut entraîner une détérioration de la santé mentale des prestataires au fil du temps. L’identification et la gestion des facteurs de stress sont cruciales pour la longévité dans le domaine des SME. Jusqu’à présent, il n’y a pas eu de formation active ni d’accent sur la santé mentale des prestataires. Cette étude visait à aider les gestionnaires à apprendre à aborder des questions délicates avec leurs subordonnés et à les informer efficacement à la suite d’incidents stressants.

Emergency medical services (EMS) is a high-stress profession, which can lead to deterioration in provider mental health over time. EMS providers may find themselves in a situation where they are not only treating the general public, but also each other. Until now, there has been no active training or emphasis on provider mental health. This has taken its toll and can lead to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) in field providers and managers alike. Identifying and managing stressors is crucial to longevity in the field of EMS. This study aimed to help managers learn to broach sensitive matters with their subordinates, and effectively debrief them following such stressful incidents.
