88 per cent of emergency showers and eyewash stations are found to be non-compliant due to performance-related issues including inadequate flow rates, temperatures and water pressure levels. Another 10 per cent of units are not compliant due to secondary factors including providing improper signage, blocked entranceways and poor lighting. Workplace safety has seen impressive improvements over the past several decades as regulations evolve, identify acceptable risk parameters, and enforce standards. In Canada, emergency shower and eyewash guidelines are set at the provincial level, many of which reference the ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 standard, Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment. This guide is not intended to be an interpretation of the entire ANSI standard, but rather it points out some of the most common compliance issues.
